I think I need to go see a counselor/get a different medicine maybe, because I just consciously realized that I’ve been sleeping, on average, at least 10 hours a day for the last ….few months, probably. Today I slept 11 hours and I’m still tired. That’s.. weird.

ETA: okay, I have an appointment for tomorrow morning (esp. since I at least need a refill for my current prescription) at 9:15 UGH. At least that means I can’t sleep for a ridiculously long time again……. ???

suggests that they’re more kindly disposed to other religions, but there is zero mention of nonbelievers/unenlightened men in there. If it said “oh and we’re ok with you guys who say there is no god whatsoever” I’d be thrilled, but it doesn’t. What struck me as astonishing about the Pope’s statements was that he seemed to grant atheists as much potential value as believers.

Hmm! I guess I didn’t really think about his statements in that way. That’s very true and definitely lends more awesome to what he’s saying. I guess the way I was looking at the original quotes/what I’ve been taught about the Church’s beliefs was that atheism was just another way of believing. But you’re right: those quotes don’t really include atheists. In fact, in another point in the Catechism, atheism is called out as one of the most serious sins of our age.

So, you’re right: Pope Francis is potentially being mind-blowing here. Curious to see where this takes him and what, if anything, the Church does with it.

Here’s what the Pope said, straight from Radio Vatican, or a good facsimile thereof. I’m particularly impressed with the following bits:

The disciples, Pope Francis explains, “were a little intolerant,” closed off by the idea of possessing the truth, convinced that “those who do not have the truth, cannot do good.” “This was wrong … Jesus broadens the horizon.”

“…this ‘closing off’ that imagines that those outside, everyone, cannot do good is a wall that leads to war and also to what some people throughout history have conceived of: killing in the name of God. That we can kill in the name of God. And that, simply, is blasphemy. To say that you can kill in the name of God is blasphemy.”

“…If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe, Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good: we will meet one another there.”

I am having a really hard time believing this is real, and not some late-May April Fool’s joke on the part of the Vatican, but…I have always, always hoped some religious leader would come out and say things like this, and to have the Pope do it is…more than I ever expected could happen.

So if it’s real, Pope Francis, you have my respect and my gratitude, and while this doesn’t erase all the shitty things the Catholic Church has done and continues to do, it’s a vast, gigantic step in the right direction.

The Catholic Church’s official stance on other religions/beliefs/ways of lives has been for a while that everyone’s right. They just believe the Catholic Church has it the most right. (Of course they do—why be a part of a religion that you don’t believe professes the truth as closely as it is possible to do so?)

The worst thing about Kindle World is that I still have/had vague ideas of working for Amazon’s publishing arm one day. I mean, I’m in Seattle and although Amazon’s publishing endeavors have been odd to date, they’re the only real publishing house in the area.

But every thing I learn about them just turns me off more and more. They may say they’re modernizing the industry, but I don’t see the value to the changes they’re making. Adding more direct-to-publish venues and minimizing the role of the editor isn’t something to applaud or further research. Vanity presses are a fad that I hope die out before too long, but Amazon isn’t exactly encouraging modern, beginning authors to explore the traditional means of agents and houses and editors.
